A Big Thank You to author/illustrator

Jonathan Miller

On March 23, Harbor View students enjoyed hearing Jonathan read two of his books and observing his unique method of creating artwork.  Jonathan also described the book-writing and book publishing process and had fun answering students' questions.

Mrs. Parker

Welcome to the Harbor View Elementary School Library!

The Mission of the Harbor View Library is to inspire a lifelong love of reading and books and to teach students how to become effective users of information and technology.  In order to thrive in the workplace of the future, students must be literate in searching for, accessing, evaluating, and using information from a wide variety of sources, print and online.

I am in my eleventh year of teaching library classes here at Harbor View. Before that, I worked at the James Island branch of the Charleston County Public Library.  I received a Masters of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina in 2005 and a teaching certification a year later.

In library class, students are encouraged to become critical thinkers through participation in discussions, exercises, and projects in which they are allowed to express and implement their own ideas for first-hand knowledge. Through being introduced to different genres and authors and listening to books and stories in library class, students learn that books can transport them to another land, that they are a great source of knowledge, and that they provide an inexpensive and easy way to entertain themselves anytime, anyplace.

Listed below are some links that are helpful to Harbor View students:

Jaime Gregory reading her book to third graders

A Big Thank You to Jaime Gregory, Harbor View mom and author of her self-published book "That's My Baby!"  This heartwarming book chronicles the story of her successful international adoption.  That child is now a student at Harbor View.  Mrs. Gregory visited the Harbor View library on Friday, March 25, and spoke to several classes, reading her book and answering students' questions about the writing process.

 Did You Know…

That the fifth grade HVES news team provides a valuable service to the Harbor View community each day by enthusiastically taking charge of anchoring the news program every morning for the entire school to view?

That students are enjoying the “Get Caught Reading!” book promotion with the chance at having their names drawn on the Monday morning news show to have their picture taken for the wall outside the library?

That throughout the year students are introduced to the SC Picture Book Award nominees (K-2nd) and the SC Children’s Book Award Nominees (3rd – 6th) during library class and vote on their favorite one each February along with all the other SC schools to help decide the winners?

That Harbor View students checked out almost 28,000 books during the 2016-2017 school year, including myON and MackinVia ebooks?

That numerous students and teachers will participate in the 2017 Summer Reading Program, and that we plan to BEAT the statistics of last summer? Also, that the two students reading the most books in 2016 logged in over 24,000 pages?

That the Harbor View Library collection consists of over 8,000 volumes, 35% of those being Non-Fiction?

That the myON database is easily accessed above on this page?

That the MackinVia multi-colored link is also easily accessed above via the Destiny Library Catalog link?

That the Harbor View Library is all about LITERACY?
