A BIG THANK YOU to author

Mary Gordon Kerr!

Fourth and Fifth Graders were treated to a visit in the library by local author Mary Gordon Kerr the morning of Monday, April 30!  Mrs. Kerr talked with students about her three fantasy/ adventure novels, The Mystery of the 13th Coin, What Lies Beneath the Whirlpool of Time, and Behind the Grave of Robert J. McCloud.

Though each book has its own characters and stories, the series is linked in that all three take place in the South Carolina Lowcountry, and they were written with chapter-by-chapter feedback from elementary school students in South Carolina.  Kerr likes to call the series "Adventures in Time".  All three novels are full of imaginative fantasy, perilous adventure and irresistible historical fiction. Learn more HEREAll three books are now offered for check-out in the Harbor View library!

Mrs. Parker

Welcome to the Harbor View Elementary School Library!

The Mission of the Harbor View Library is to inspire a lifelong love of reading and books and to teach students how to become effective users of information and technology.  In order to thrive in the workplace of the future, students must be literate in searching for, accessing, evaluating, and using information from a wide variety of sources, print and online.

I am in my thirteenth year of teaching library classes here at Harbor View. Before that, I worked at the James Island branch of the Charleston County Public Library.  I received a Masters of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina in 2005 and a teaching certification a year later.

In library class, students are encouraged to become critical thinkers through participation in discussions, exercises, and projects in which they are allowed to express and implement their own ideas for first-hand knowledge. Through being introduced to different genres and authors and listening to books and stories in library class, students learn that books can transport them to another land, that they are a great source of knowledge, and that they provide an inexpensive and easy way to entertain themselves anytime, anyplace.
